Mystic Peaks: Journey Through the Caucasus

The Caucasus Mountains are a stunning mountain range located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, stretching between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. This region, known as the Caucasus, is home to Mount Elbrus, which stands at 5,642 meters (18,510 feet) and is the highest peak in Europe. The mountains play a major role in shaping the region’s climate, culture, and geopolitics.
The area is rich in rivers such as the Bziphi, Kodori, Enguri, Rioni, and Tergi, which flow into the Black, Caspian, and Azov seas. The landscape features glaciers, karst formations, tectonic and volcanic lakes, and a wide variety of terrain, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
The Caucasus Mountains are divided into two main ranges: the Greater Caucasus in the north and the Lesser Caucasus in the south. The Greater Caucasus stretches from the northeastern coast of the Black Sea all the way to near Baku on the Caspian Sea in Azerbaijan. While the north of Georgia is well-known for its dramatic mountain scenery, the south is equally breathtaking. The Samsari Ridge, of volcanic origin, is a must-see in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. Its highest peak, Didi Abuli, reaches 3,301 meters. Hiking here in the spring offers views of colorful wildflower fields and stunning alpine lakes such as Levani’s Lake, Lake Abuli, Lamazi Lake, and Mrude Lake. From the northern slopes of the ridge, you can also enjoy views of the beautiful Lake Tabatskuri.
Whether you're drawn to towering peaks, scenic hikes, or peaceful lakes, the Caucasus Mountains offer something for every traveler.
